Screen Capture
Film Stills provide an excellent resource for discussing film shots, characterization, eye-line, and other elements that contribute to narrative. The two programs mentioned below will provide an inexpensive way to capture a film still.

Windows
WinDVD is DVD player software. Start the DVD then click the camera icon to capture a still image. After you have saved the still, you can paste it into a Power Point. You can then use arrows, circles, and squares to point out features of the movie still. If you are trying to capture a screen still from a movie or short downloaded from the Apple iTunes store, WinDVD will not work. You can use the Screen Capture function key on a PC running Windows. Macintosh
For the Macintosh the process is not as exact, at least not with the free software that I use. There is actually a widget for capturing screen shots called "Screen Shot Plus." You can download this from Apple Widgets. Activate widgets, play your movie in the background and click the camera icon. The screen below the widgets will be come active. Place the camera on the window you want to capture and click. You can select the format for saving the file. Once you have captured the file you can paste it into presentation software.
