All members of developed nations have some degree of media literacy. Potter (2001) calls this basic level of media literacy "rudimentary." A rudimentary level of literacy is what one uses to make sense of media at a surface level. Rudimentary media literacy allows us to construct meanings from media, to get the "message." Media education is the process of helping students develop beyond this rudimentary level to a more advanced understanding of media texts.
